Illustration Friday: Muddy

Our elementary school had a sale to get rid of some old furniture and athletic equipment. I purchased twenty oak school chairs that were rather distressed, but a real bargain at two dollars apiece. I've sanded some of them, illustrated either the image of a cowboy on horseback or a fairy onto the seat using color pencil along with an inscription on the back of the chair. This particular one that I'm currently working on will be a gift for a coworker of my husband's who is expecting a baby. In the past I have used oil based polyurethane to protect the art on the chair, but I am a little worried about the colors becoming "muddy" or washed out. Does anyone who may have used pencils on wood have any ideas? Your suggestions would be appreciated. Thank you!

I wish I could advise but have never done this type of art. It really looks wonderful and I hope you show it again when you are done.

Wow, that's a tough one...I wish I could help. But I like your interpretation of the prompt - it was one of my first thoughts...muddy medium. I hope you get some resolution, but it looks fantastic already!

I have no idea but you are giving me some grand inspiration. This is brilliant and very beautiful. Has an old world quality that I adore. This fantastic. I wish I had some ideas about colored pencil on wood. Now if you trying watercolor pencil that's a little bit different. After you color with the watercolor pencil, just use a moist q-tip swab to blend it in and see what effects you get. Great work.

Well... I have painted with acrylic on wood and I used spray on the top. So far the colors on the paintings still hold well.
This is a wonderful illustration and you gave a new life to those chairs.

Don't suppose if I brought you an antique child's chair you could do something with it for my niece? :)

Vicki, darling, your magical talent is so exceptional. The first time I saw this image, I knew I had to have it somehow in my life. Took months to figure out where, but the kid-sized, antique wooden school chair is a perfect home for for it. Glad that I get to wait until next Christmas to pass it along to my wee niece so I can fill it with lots of love before making the transfer. Thank you so very much! Miss you!
